Internships

clubGEN Mentor

Location: Various Middle Schools in the Austin Independent School District

The primary function of this role is safety and on-site supervision of clubGEN participants and facilitators. clubGEN is a weekly, after-school, peer mentoring program that trains high school girls (facilitators) to be peer mentors for middle school girls (participants), engaging them in activities throughout the school year that promote self-esteem, resilience, confidence, and leadership. Additionally, mentors will coach, empower, and support the high school facilitators as they develop valuable teamwork and leadership skills and will be an added support to the peer-led model. Mentors will be influential to the high school girls as they learn to assess their individual values, relationships, and goals in relation to building a strong team of empowered young women.

Entrance Requirements

  1. Ability to volunteer 1.5 hours between the hours of 3:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. on at least one week day Monday through Thursday.
  2. Access to email for regular updates about programs, time changes, and curriculum activities.
  3. Reliable transportation.
  4. Ability to pass a background check.
  5. Commitment to the goals and philosophies of GENaustin.

Sub-mentor positions also needed. This mentor would be on an "on call" list and would fill in for regularly scheduled mentors who are unable to make it to club. The same application and training process applies.

clubGEN Recruitment Specialist

Location: All Middle Schools in AISD

GENaustin is looking for Strong Female Volunteer Leaders to assist with the clubGEN membership recruitment. Volunteers will serve at one of 18 Austin area middle schools. Volunteers will offer students and parents information about our afterschool program and the GENcentive program.

Time commitment:
1 hour minimum up two hours for each day.
We need volunteers who can be available during lunch times and afterschool times during our big recruitment weeks throughout the year to help the outreach specialists get to all of their schools. The big weeks are:

  • August 25th - 29th
  • September 1st - 5th
  • October 6th - 10th
  • November 3rd - 7th
  • January 6th - 9th

 

  • January 12th - 16th
  • February 16th - 20th
  • February 23rd - 27th
  • May 4th - 8th

Entrance Requirements

Volunteers should be able to effectively articulate GENaustin's mission and the clubGEN afterschool program. You must be willing to field questions from potential club members and their guardians, assist them with clubGEN membership forms and the GENcentive program.
Reliable transportation.
Volunteers will work program managers and the Outreach Specialist during all these events.

English to Spanish Translator

Location: Anywhere - May work from home.

This volunteer will need to be able to translate our newsletter, information flyers and other important documents for the parents and students of our Spanish clubGEN after school program.

Entrance Requirements:
Volunteer should have excellent Spanish grammar, and the ability to make the documents flow with ease using vocabulary of Spanish speaking residents of South Texas.

Fun Activities Coordinator

Location: All Middle Schools in AISD

This volunteer will facilitate fun activities with the clubGEN participants after the middle school students get out of school and before clubGEN begins in an effort to keep the girls engaged and prepare them for club.

Time commitment: Average of one hour per event; During the hours of 3:30 - 4:30 on either Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, or Thursday. Ongoing opportunity from September 8 - May 22.

Skills/Experience Needed:
Enthusiasm about working with youth and empowering girls.
Reliable transportation.
Ability to pass a background check.

Communications Intern
Location: Ann Richard School

Summary of Position

The Girls Empowerment Network of Austin (GENaustin) seeks a Community Relations intern to collaborate with the Resource Development and Public Relations personnel. As a fully integrated member of GENaustin, an intern will be given the opportunity to:

  • produce outreach materials such as a brochure
  • research
  • press release writing
  • outreach to local media outlets
  • newsletter
  • write success stories
  • photography
  • edit video content for our website
  • and assist with other PR related tasks.

In addition to the everyday workload, efforts are made towards educating interns about the organization as a whole through meetings, events, and other opportunities.

Entrance Requirements

  1. Preferably undergraduate or graduate students with a major related to public relations, journalism, or communications.
  2. Excellent research, writing, and oral communications skills.
  3. Available to work on a committed weekly schedule (minimum 10 hours/week for at least three months) during our 8:30 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. office hours.
  4. Reliable transportation.
  5. Ability to organize time, set priorities, and work under pressure while paying attention to detail.
  6. Strong computer skills.
  7. Good disposition, hard working, creative, with an interest in taking on a variety of tasks.
  8. Commitment to the goals and philosophies of GENaustin.
