Seven New Leaders Join GENaustin’s Board

GENaustin’s Board of Directors has always been a group of cutting edge, entrepreneurial women and men who were dedicated to the girl cause – and the new class of 2010 is no different!

A special welcome to the seven new leaders joining GENaustin’s Board of Directors!

Rossana Barrios

Rossana Barrios is the Planning Manager for Travis County Information & Technology Services. She manages strategic and tactical activities and functions in the Business Development & Strategic Planning Division for IT by coordinating with the associated Project Management and Business Analyst teams. She participates in web content management, budget planning, best practices research and implementation, and assists with review and implementation of Enterprise Architecture, Business Intelligence Strategy and Identity Management for Countywide projects.

She served from 2006-2009 as the Council Executive to former Mayor Pro Tem, Brewster McCracken, where she was in charge of Community Relations and Constituent Services. Her policy areas included affordable housing, animal welfare, cultural and art policy, health and human services, technology and telecommunications, public works, public safety, and solid waste services.

Ms. Barrios holds a Master of Public Administration degree from Texas State University. She was a member of the MPA Advisory Council for Texas State University, serving two terms from 2002-2006. In 2004, she was appointed as an Adjunct Professor to Texas State University’s Political Science Department graduate program for a two-year term. She served the City of Austin as a Commissioner on the 2005 Bond Advisory Board. She also served on the City of Austin Library Commission and the Austin Community Education Consortium. She is member of the 2008 Leadership Austin Essentials Class.

She currently serves on the Board of Directors for GENaustin and as a Commissioner on the Mexican American Cultural Center Advisory Board for the City of Austin. She has been a volunteer for many community organizations, and has served on the school board for St. Ignatius Catholic School and the Cathedral School of St. Mary.




Berry Crowley

Beryl ''Berry'' P. Crowley is the Managing Director in Major, Lindsey & Africa’s Austin, Texas office, and principle in the offices of Beryl P. Crowley, Attorney & Counselor. She received her B.A. from Mills College in Oakland, CA and her J.D. from The University of Texas School of Law. Berry was admitted to the Texas Bar in 1972 and the US Supreme Court Bar in 2002. Her first twenty-two years in practice were spent in a law firm setting as a partner with a general office practice at Jackson Walker, formerly Small, Craig & Werkenthin of Austin. Over the next twelve plus years Berry served in a non-profit bar-related education setting, as Executive Director of The Texas Center for Legal Ethics and Professionalism. She built the center into the premier organization of its kind in the United States, and created and developed innovative legal ethics and professionalism programs. Board Chair, Women’s Advocacy Project (Texas non-profit which furnishes legal services to victims of domestic violence and sexual attacks) (2005—2007)

Janis Guerrero, Ph.D.

Janis Guerrero Thompson holds three degrees from The University of Texas at Austin: a Ph.D. in Educational Administration, a Master of Arts in Curriculum and Instruction, and a Bachelor of Sciences in Education. In her current position as Executive Director for Planning and Community Relations at Austin Independent School District, Dr. Guerrero oversees the district’s strategic planning, communications and media services, translation and interpretation services, foundation development and special projects, business partnerships, event management, ombudsman, and customer service. She has an extensive background in public school and higher education that includes teaching in Austin I.S.D., directing a statewide professional development program at the Texas Education Agency, and directing communications and external relations at The University of Texas Dana Center.

Dr. Guerrero is a native Austinite and is an active volunteer for her community and church. She has served as Vice Chair of the Board of Directors for Central Texas Goodwill Industries, and as President of the Board of Directors for Executive Women in Texas Government. She serves as Chair of the City of Austin’s Civil Service Commission, and serves on the Advisory Boards of the Seedling Foundation and the United Way Hispanic Community Initiative. She is an active volunteer in Chaplain Services at Brackenridge Hospital, and in the Ministry for the Homebound at St. Mary Cathedral. She regularly serves as a Eucharistic Minister and Lector for St. Mary Cathedral, and served on the Steering Committee for the Austin Diocese’s Our Faith Our Legacy capital campaign. In June 2004, Hispanic Magazine recognized Dr. Guerrero as a “Top Latina in Community Service.” In February 2008, La Voz de Austin, Austin Community College, and the Texas Association of Chicanos in Higher Education honored Dr. Guerrero as “25 Most Influential Hispanics in Austin.”




Melissa Anne Jones (No picture shown)

Melissa is originally from Houston and has lived in Austin for the last 32 years. She graduated from the University of Texas in Austin in 1973 and pursued a career in broadcasting in Austin and California before returning to Houston. In Houston and later at the state capitol she reported for KTRH Radio. She has two grown children, a married son in Denver and a daughter in Austin.

Melissa has been on several non-profit boards in both Houston and Austin: In Houston she was a member of The Society for the Performing Arts and a Trustee of Houston Endowment for twelve years. In Austin she is a member and past president of The Settlement Club of Austin, a former board member of SafePlace, Southwestern University Board of Visitors, the University of Texas at Austin College of Natural Sciences Foundation Advisory Board, and Greenlights for Non-Profit Success Advisory Board, the Advisory Board of the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center and the Blanton Museum Council. She is currently Board Secretary for the Texas Democracy Foundation, GENaustin board of director and a member of the KIPP Austin Academy finance committee. She is also a board member of Austin Trust Company and JT Jones Ranch.




Kristen Lark

Kristen Lark is a seasoned communicator specializing in brand positioning, consumer marketing, stakeholder communications and issues management. A former senior vice president and partner at a leading global public relations firm, Kristen has worked with such world-class consumer brands as Visa, Yahoo!, Netflix, SBC Communications (now AT&T;), Microsoft and Dell Computer Corporation. During her career, her roles have included strategic counselor, consumer advocate, company spokesperson and journalist. Kristen holds a bachelor of art’s degree in journalism and professional writing from Baylor University. After spending much of her career in San Francisco, she currently lives in Austin with her husband and two young children.




Maura Thomas

Maura Thomas is the founder & Chief Trainer at RegainYourTime.com, an Austin-based business since 2003. Her expertise in organization and efficiency comes from 16 years in the productivity training industry. During that time, she developed a process for getting things done with low stress and increased efficiency, called the Empowered Productivity System TM. She has been invited to speak and train at business groups, conferences, events, and corporations, large and small, nationally and internationally. She earned an M.B.A. from the University of Massachusetts, and publishes a widely-read blog on productivity issues and has a strong social media presence. Her business endeavors keep her very active in the local community, and in addition to her board position with GENaustin, she holds leadership positions in a variety of different community organizations and non-profits. She was selected from almost 7,000 applicants for The Climate Project (www.theclimateproject.org), where has been personally trained by former Vice President and Nobel Laureate Al Gore to educate people about climate change. Social responsibility is very important to Maura and RegainYourTime.com donates a percentage of all training fees received to charity.




Renee Peterson Trudeau

Renée Peterson Trudeau is a nationally-recognized career/life balance coach and president of Austin-based Career Strategists, a coaching/consulting firm dedicated to helping professionals successfully navigate their career path. Her corporate clients include Fortune 500 companies and national women's organizations such as Ernst and Young and IBM.
