Athena Boyd, originally from Vancouver, BC, moved to Austin in 2006 after backpacking Central and South America for a year and a half with her husband. Upon moving to Austin she got her Masters degree in Advanced Literacy and was a substitute teacher for Eanes ISD. In May 2009, Athena and her husband welcomed their daughter, Areia. She enjoyed the first year of motherhood at home with Areia and then became a business owner by becoming a franchisee of Blo Blow Dry Bar (now with 2 Austin locations) in 2011. In her spare time she enjoys traveling and Austin’s active lifestyle. And, of course, she enjoys the flexibility that her career offers her in order to spend quality time with her family and rescue dog Lucy.
My Challenge
Athena’s Big Brave challenge is public speaking.
I’ve never done well in crowds, or in any setting where all eyes were on me; I’m a bit of an introvert. Growing up, I struggled with bullies and I’ve always dreamed about telling my story in order to help others get through similar situations. I’ve decided to tackle my fear of public speaking by telling other young girls my story live in person. I’m hoping my ability to face my fears and speak publicly about the challenges I faced will help reach some of the young women facing these same challenges and offer them a support system. I want them to know that they are not alone in their battles and that many people are here to help them get through it and/or rise above it. I’m also hoping that it will inspire my friends and family to donate and help me reach my $5,000 goal, which will in turn provide amazing opportunities for the young women of GENaustin.
100% of all Big Brave donations will go directly towards benefitting GENaustin.
