clubGEN Volunteer Position Frequently Asked Questions

What grade do I have to be in to apply for the clubGEN volunteer position?

We accept applications from high school students who will be sophomores, juniors or seniors in the coming school year. We also accept applications from former clubGEN members entering their freshman year of high school.

When does the clubGEN volunteer position start?

Training for the position will start in August. The training will be a day of leadership skills, team building activities, topic workshops and training on volunteer policies and procedures.

What middle schools will I be volunteering at if I am selected as a clubGEN volunteer?

clubGEN volunteer teams are organized by the location of high schools that are within a reasonable distance from your volunteer site (middle school). The distance is usually within a 5 to 8 mile radius from the high school.

How will I get to the middle school job sites from my high school? Is there transportation?

GENaustin does not provide transportation. clubGEN volunteers are required to have reliable transportation to the middle schools and trainings.

What is the deadline for submitting my application?

We are accepting applications on an ongoing basis until our teams are complete. We encourage you to submit an application as soon as possible.

What time does the clubGEN group start and what time do I have to be there?

We ask that you arrive at the middle school site by 4:30PM each day you are scheduled to volunteer. If you can, arriving sooner will allow you to spend more time with the middle school girls.

My high school dismissal time is much later than the middle school; do I have to get out of class early?

No, you do not need to leave early. But you do need to arrive at your middle school site by 4:30PM so that you can spend time with the middle school girls before clubGEN ends around 5:00-5:15pm. If you do get out early form school, this will allow you to spend more time with the clubGEN members. We encourage you to spend as much time with the clubGEN members as possible.

How many days a week does the clubgen volunteer work?

Volunteers are asked to work a minimum of 2 days per month, plus 1 additional day for a planning meeting with their team volunteers. The volunteer days will be scheduled with the clubGEN weekly curriculum.

Do I have to volunteer on the weekends if I am selected?

We schedule planning meetings and trainings on weekends. There will be about 2-3 of these meetings per semester. We will notify you of the dates well in advance, so that you can make arrangements to fit them into your schedule.

    Is this a year-long position?

This position is for the entire school year. It begins in August and ends in May. We ask that all volunteers commit to the full school year. A few schools only have fall or spring programs. We will make sure you know the details of your middle school clubGEN site before you start the position.

Do the clubGEN volunteers work during the summer?

There is currently not a clubGEN summer program, but we hope to have one soon. Your clubGEN volunteer training will take place at the end of summer in August.

If selected as a clubGEN volunteer, can I just volunteer half of the school year and then play sports the other half?

No. We ask that you to make a full school year commitment. The clubGEN volunteer leadership program is competitive and we encourage you to be sure to think about this requirement before committing to the position.

Can I print and then fax in my completed application?

No, we only accept completed application via email. We are trying to keep Texas beautiful by keeping the application process “green.”

Do I need to have Adobe Acrobat Reader to download the PDF application?

Yes, you may need to have Adobe Reader installed or Microsoft Word on the computer you are using to fill out the application. You can download Adobe here.

Do I need a word processor application for my application?

Yes, you may need an application like Microsoft Word, Text Editor or Google Docs to complete your application.

How do I save the file before emailing it in?

Please be sure to save a copy of the application on your desktop first. Use the following guide:

    FOR EXAMPLE: firstname_lastname_schoolname.pdf (Lora_Alaniz_Austin)

Can I participate in other afterschool activities like sports, cheer squad, dance, etc. if I am selected as a clubGEN volunteer?

Yes, you can participate as long as the activity hours do not conflict with your clubGEN volunteer schedule. You will have the schedule of volunteer dates at the beginning of the year so you can plan accordingly.

From which high schools are you recruiting?

We will be recruiting from high schools that feed into the middle schools from the following school districts: Austin, Hays, Manor, Round Rock, Del Valle, Round Rock and Leander.

Why aren’t you recruiting from other high schools?

We currently have partnerships to serve specific middle schools and we try our best to match volunteers with the feeder patterns and population of the schools where they will be working at.

What are my chances of being selected for the clubGEN volunteer position?

The clubGEN volunteer position is competitive. We receive hundreds of applications each school year and unfortunately can only select applicants that are the best match for the position and the students they will be working with.
