What’s a “Do-Over!”?
Ann Daly PhD
Every so often, when I’m reminiscing with old friends, I hear myself saying, “Oh, my gosh, that was at least four lifetimes ago!”
And, in fact, I have invented at least that many lives for myself. I started out as a daily newspaper journalist, then spent several decades in academia, and now I’m a life coach and professional speaker. I’ve made homes in cities from Pittsburgh to New York to Austin, Texas. I’ve been married twice.
As I look back over my 50 years, I can see how I’ve always been eager to call for a “Do-Over!” I invoke that term with all its gleeful, exuberant, childlike optimism.
And I’m not alone. Women are reinventing themselves with a frequency and intensity that could hardly be imagined by our mothers’ generation.
Women have embraced the fluidity of 21st century culture, in which our bodies, minds, and identities are in constant motion. It’s an opportunity for us to rewrite the rules as well as reinvent our lives.
Working moms are challenging the old rigidities of the corporate workplace. Boomers are changing the face of so-called “retirement.” Record numbers of women are switching careers, or becoming entrepreneurs. Women are less willing to settle for business, or life, as usual.
Are you ready for a do-over?
Are you feeling the flutters? That’s what I call a barely noticeable case of the butterflies. The flutters are what launched me, believe it or not, from one profession into the next.
Or, maybe you’re feeling stuck. Grounded on the runway without a flight plan or sufficient fuel.
In either case, this audiobook is for you.
What I’ve done is to assemble 13 stories about women working on a Do-Over. Some of them are my stories, some of them are stories of friends and clients, and some are stories from women I’ve sought out for advice. You’ll hear all about the rocket-scientist-turned-entrepreneur, the restless retiree, and my own mom.
They are stories that have inspired and energized me, and I hope they will have the same effect on you. There’s nothing like a good story to show us the possibilities and show us the way. As women, we know the power of collective encouragement. You go, girl!
But I want to give you something even more than inspiration and encouragement. As a coach, I want to help you get clear about what you want and how to get it. I want you to take action. I want to get an email from you someday telling me your Do-Over! story.
You probably already know, reinvention isn’t easy. It requires clarity and focus, resourcefulness and guts. The price can be high, and the investment demanding. But what’s the point of life, if we don’t keep challenging ourselves? Or, as Tennyson put it, “To follow knowledge like a sinking star, /Beyond the utmost bound of human thought.”
So let’s get you started on your do-over. It begins with a dream.
