Thursday, Jan 13: The Best of Friends: Helping Girls Navigate Peer Relationships

Location: Canyon Ridge Middle School

Audience: For girls and parents

Ever feel confused, angry or even hurt towards your best friend? Ever feel too much pressure at school? It's normal to experience either or both of these, but even "normal" can be hard to deal with. Learn how to better understand your friendships, and get some constructive ideas on how to change uncomfortable relationship patterns. Join Katie Malinksi, LCSW, a counselor in private practice, to explore this topic.

Thursday, Jan 20: Telling Our Stories: Girls Making Media

Location: Dobie Middle School
Time: 2:00 p.m.
Audience: For girls

Much has been made of mass media's harmful representations of girls and women. But what happens when women and girls take matters (and cameras) in their own hands? Nancy Schiesari, a UT radio-television-film professor, will co-facilitate this presentation with a young female Austinite who is "making it" in the film industry. The workshop will address how girls can "talk back" to the media by creating their own messages.

Wednesday, Jan 26: Sexual Harassment: Facts, Myths & Powerful Responses

Location: Fulmore Middle School

Audience: For girls

We've all heard the term "sexual harassment" but what does it really mean? How does it affect us at school and at work and in our social lives? We'll discuss what it looks like, how, when and why it occurs and what you can do about it. Join Shannon Huggins, LCSW, who has worked with Austin teens for over ten years, for a lively interactive discussion.

Thursday, Jan 27: Yoga for Modern Girls

Location: Redeemer Lutheran School
Time: 11:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m.
Audience: For girls & parents

Come get a taste of how yoga can help your mind, body and spirit. Learn basic yoga moves and how to incoporate relaxation techniques into your daily life. Understand your body in a way completely different from what fashion magazines tell you, and find out how to let go of stress at home and at school. Yoga is fun! Wear comfortable clothing. It's best to do yoga on an empty stomach; if you need to eat beforehand, eat lightly. Anita Stoll, LMSW-ACP, is a certified hatha yoga instructor, and Kelly Inselmann, LMSW-ACP, is a certified kundalini yoga instructor.
