Kate Kelly, one of KVUE TV's "Five Kids Who Care" award recipients in 2000, is our featured volunteer!
Kate, 14, is a straight A student at Hill Country Middle School, where she plays in the band,
performs with Hill Country Players, volunteers with National Junior Honor Society and participates
in the Gifted and Talented Program. At home, she enjoys playing the piano, chatting with friends
over the internet and building her own web pages. She’s still a Girl Scout and enjoys camping with
her troop. A long-time soccer player, she recently has switched to recreational volleyball.
As a volunteer, Kate has:
- painted houses for Hands On Housing
- served meals to the homeless at El Buen Samaritano
- made craft kits for Brackenridge Children’s Hospital
- helped to host an annual Christmas party for patients at the Texas State Mental Hospital
- collected food for the Community Food Bank
- passed out fliers, sold T-shirts, introduced nationally known speakers at GENaustin speaker events
- checked GENaustin mail and reminded her mom to answer it
Most recently, she was one of two young women who participated, along with GENaustin Board Members,
in interviewing candidates for the project’s first executive director position. Through three hours
of interviewing, she took copious notes and her enthusiasm never waned. When the project convenes its
Girls' Advisory Board, she is sure to be an active participant.
Kate has been consistent in her volunteer efforts and spirit, whether it be for church, school,
or "mom’s stuff." Through her participation, "mom’s stuff" is now becoming "her stuff." We are very
proud of her diligence, her eagerness to learn, her growing abilities and her willingness to take
on more and more responsibilities as a volunteer.
