Directed by Kevin Sullivan
Starring Megan Follows and Colleen Dewhurst
VHS
Produced for Canadian Television, this movie quickly became a Disney Channel and video hit with American girls after its release in the 80's, and it's remained a classic since. A slightly changed but spiritually faithful adaptation of L.M. Montgomery's book of the same name, this film is luxuriously filmed and superbly acted. Megan Follows makes Anne just as appealing on the screen as on the page; her portrayal is so energetic and inspiring to imaginative girls with an independent streak, many of us still watch this movie as adults! But, remember: read the book first! Then you will appreciate it even more.

Directed by John Huston
Starring Carol Burnett and Albert Finney
VHS and DVD
Though some critics thought this adaptation of the Broadway hit was a little less exciting than its on stage inspiration, there's no way to erase the twenty years of happy viewers. This version of Annie has collected many fans over a couple of generations. The cast is funny and entertaining, and the central story of a plucky orphan girl who finds her place in the world still inspires, even if it is a tad influenced by fairy-tales and a bit light on the reality of the dark, Depression-era setting. A new generation of young girls will be happy to claim Annie as their own, and, unless you're lucky enough to catch this classic on Broadway sometime soon, this film is probably your best introduction to the tale. And we cannot forget: the music is fabulous!
