AUSTIN - August marks the official launch of oriGENal voice, a
benefit compilation CD capitalizing on Austin’s reputation
as “The Live Music Capital of the World.” Proceeds from
the sale of the CD support the innovative programming of GENaustin,
the Girls Empowerment Network of Austin, a local non-profit dedicated
to building girls’ self esteem.
The CD features previously unreleased tracks from Bob Schneider
and Trish Murphy and contributions from Sheryl Crow, Patti Griffin,
and Blues Traveler. oriGENal voice shares the same name as GENaustin’s
most recently acquired program, which educates girls on how to find
their voices, to speak up and influence others through advocacy
and public policy. The oriGENal voice program’s current focus
is promoting a healthy and tobacco-free lifestyles.
Other GENaustin programs include clubGEN, a weekly after-school
program where high school students and adult sponsors are trained
to lead elementary and middle school girls through experiential
activities about body image; education, technology and careers;
relational aggression; suicide and depression; stress; divorce;
self-esteem and confidence; friendship; communication; family relationships
and values; goal-setting; gossip and rumors. GENaustin also hosts
a year-long Speaker Series, where girls and their parents are treated
to condensed lectures on many of the same topics listed above.
