The Stars Come Out For GEN—CD to Benefit GENaustin in the Works

Headed by Alexa Wesner, co-chair of GEN’s Resource Development Committee, and Trish Murphy, board member and singer-songwriter extraordinaire, a compilation CD benefiting GENaustin is in the works.

The committee is in the process of soliciting artists and reviewing and selecting songs. Murphy said they “will theme the CD around empowerment. We’re listening for creative implementations of the theme of empowerment. It’s been fun matching the theme to songs from potential artists. We are including a diverse range of artists—a balance of local and national, men and women—that come together with a great group of songs.”

Murphy herself will have one track on the disc. “I’ve got a song called Relentless that hasn’t been released yet that I’ve felt kind of instinctive from the beginning about including. It’s about growing into your empowerment, coupled with themes of endurance—some of women’s finer qualities.”

All profits from the CD will go to GEN. Austin Ventures is the lead corporate sponsor of the CD. New boutique, Girl Next Door is also sponsoring the effort. If you are interested in joining these sponsors, contact [email protected] to inquire about sponsorship opportunities.

Keeping Our Kids Connected: Pathways to Resilience, May 14

In a world filled with peer pressure and bullying, where "cool" rules, how can we help our youth develop resilience? Join the YWCA of Greater Austin and Austin Women’s Psychotherapy Project with St. Edward’s University Psychological Services Center and GENaustin for “Keeping Our Kids Connected: Pathways to Resilience.” Judith Jordan, Ph.D. and Maureen Walker, Ph.D. of the Jean Baker Miller Training Institute of the Stone Center at Wellesley College will discuss how we can teach our kids to stay strong and healthy in their relationships with peers and adults. Parents, teachers, school counselors and youth workers are encouraged to attend.

The event will be held Friday May 14, 2004, 7:00 pm – 9:00 pm at St Edward’s University, Main Building, Maloney Room.

Firekeepers: A Different Kind of Summer Camp

Firekeepers Teen Camp (June 5-15th) is a unique sleep away camp where teenagers participate in some traditional camp activities like the high ropes course, horseback riding and canoeing. However, what separates this camp from most others is that there is also a strong emphasis on inner growth as teens transition from being boys and girls to becoming young men and women. Being a teenager is sometimes like being on fire. There are very few people that have the energy, interest and insight to tend the fire of teenage spirit.
