3M Half Marathon Benefiting GENaustin has "Hit The Ground Running" |
|
|
|
The 2002 3M Half Marathon and Relay and 5K Fun Walk/Run is Sunday, February 3, two weeks prior to the Motorola Austin Marathon. The event, with the theme, "A step in the right direction," will be similar to the 2001 event. "Stability is something we think a lot of folks are looking for right now. There is a lot of warm familiarity to our event that runners like," said Matt Fagan, Event Organizing Chairman for the 2002 3M Half Marathon & Relay. "We've been on the first Sunday in February since 1996. And even though it is Super Bowl Sunday, we believe that runners will turn out to support the event as strong as ever."
3M will continue to use the popular and fast southbound, point-to-point, mostly downhill race course, which begins at Gateway Shopping Center on Loop 360 and ends at House Park Stadium in downtown Austin. The 3M 5K Fun Run/Walk will use the same portion of the half marathon course used since 1998. The starting time for both races is 7:30 a.m. 3M will also continue the 0.3 mile non-competitive Fun-Run for children 8-years-old and under.
GENaustin has been actively recruiting corporations, local businesses, and service organizations to sponsor waterstops along the race route. For a cash contribution ranging from $250 to $1,000 made to GENaustin, Waterstop Sponsors can receive their logo and/or mention in the following: banner at waterstop; runners instruction booklet; walkers instruction booklet; press kit sponsor insert; post-race advertising; and GENaustin web site, newsletter, and Speaker Series calendar.
Only four waterstops remain open for sponsorship, so please contact GENaustin at [email protected] for details.

Our November events include great advice for both parents and girls.
"High-Tech Dreams: Keeping Them Alive in Girls" sponsored by Motorola. Bright high-tech futures often dim for girls in middle school as many lose interest in math and science. Join young Austin women from IBM, i2 Technologies, Motorola, Tivoli, Vignette, and Prodigy. GENaustin will help girls explore who has "made it" in the high-tech industry, look at the relationship between self-confidence and math and science, and how experiences in middle school can make or break high-tech opportunities for girls. Facilitated by Donna Van Fleet, a retired executive from IBM and a 31-year veteran of high tech, speakers will help de-mystify high-tech career options and offer advice on what parents and educators can do to encourage girls in math and science. Friday, November 2, Noon - 1:30 p.m., Paredes Middle School, 10100 S. Mary Moore Searight Drive (south of Slaughter near Manchaca)
"Are You Listening to Me?" by Judy Farmer, Executive Director, Texas Partners in Education. Attend this popular session and discover more effective ways to communicate with your pre-teen and adolescent daughters. Walk in her shoes and help her feel heard and understood. Through group interaction and activities, parents will leave the workshop more prepared to communicate effectively with the important people in their lives. Bring your lunch. Wednesday, November 7, Noon - 2:00 p.m., Covington Middle School, 3700 Convict Hill (just south of William Cannon and Brodie Lane)
"What's You're A.Q.? Take the Quiz!" by Barbara Waisman, a former school counselor speaks about the 40 identified strengths (called assets) that can actually protect you from making harmful choices and help you keep a positive attitude. How many do you have? Use a checklist and compare yourself to thousands of kids from all over the U.S. It's never too late to build up your "A.Q." (Asset Quotient)! Thursday, November 8, 3:30 - 5:00 p.m., Fulmore Middle School, 201 Mary (off South Congress at Mary)
"Parenting for Your Daughter's Success" by Cynthia Schiebel, director of Guidance for Eanes ISD. Why do some girls struggle through adolescence, while others seem to manage more successfully? Ms. Schiebel will share what's known about teen girls and how parents can help daughters build developmental assets for health, happiness and success. Tuesday, November 13, 6:30 - 8:00 p.m., Library of Chisholm Trail Middle School, 8455 Spicewood Springs Road (near IH 183 and Spicewood Springs Road)
